The Law and Justice Committee of the DeKalb County Board met on Monday, September 10, 2009 @ 6:30p.m. in the DeKalb County Administration Building’s Conference Room East. Chairman Marlene Allen called the meeting to order. Those present were Riley Oncken, Kevin Chambliss, Derek Tyson and Anita Turner. Ms. Margi Gilmour and Ms. Regina Harris were also present.
APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
Moved by Mr. Oncken, seconded by Ms. Turner, and it was carried unanimously to approve the minutes from July and August 2009.

Moved by Ms. Turner, seconded by Mr. Oncken, and it was carried unanimously to approve the agenda
ELECTION OF A NEW VICE-CHAIRMAN
Chairman Allen appointed Ms. Anita Turner as the new vice-chairman of the law and justice committee.
Moved by Mr. Oncken, seconded by Mr. Tyson, and it was carried unanimously to approve Ms. Anita Turner as the new Vice-Chairman of the Law and Justice Committee.
COURT SERVICES REPORTS – MS. MARGI GILMOUR
Ms. Gilmour, Director of the DeKalb County Court Services Department, said that in the Adult Report that there were no changes since last month. She also mentioned that the Community Restitution Services hours completed last month amounted to just over 5,500 hours.
Ms. Gilmour then reported that under the Juvenile Court Services Report that there was 1 young man that is in residential placement, who is a sex offender. She said that her budget for residential placement this year will be okay even with this admittance into Onarga.
Ms. Gilmour also said that the Safehouse is moving along this past month. She said that they have interviewed potential foster people for the home. They like one of the applicants who is a single parent with two children of her own.
PUBLIC DEFENDER’S REPORT – MS. REGINA HARRIS
Ms. Harris, DeKalb County Public Defender, said that her office is holding their own with regards to caseload. She said that with the cases that they are seeing lately, it shows that our community is changing with regards to seeing more violence in the crimes committed in our community, like armed robbery and home invasion.
Ms. Harris said that in relation to the recent murder case that has happened in DeKalb County, their office has not been approached yet to represent the defendant. She is not sure if they will get the case.
JAIL REPORT
Before adjourning, Ms. Supple, DeKalb County Coordinator, wanted to point out to the committee that the numbers have risen slightly with regards to the population count in the Jail to 120 inmates for the month of August 2009.
ADJOURNMENT
Moved by Mr. Oncken, seconded by Ms. Turner, and it was carried unanimously to adjourn so that the committee could go on the Tour of the DeKalb County Courthouse.
