POLITICAL SIGN PROCEDURES AND REGULATIONS
DeKalb County
A sign permit must be obtained from the Planning and Zoning Office located
on the 4th floor of the County Administration Building at 110 East Sycamore
Street, Sycamore. There is a $20.00 fee for the sign permit, and a $100.00
deposit required. The deposit will be refunded after the sign(s) have been
removed. Signs must be removed 7 days after the election has concluded. A
political sign may not be displayed more than 30 days prior to an election.
Signs that are displayed in an agricultural area may not exceed 32 square
feet in gross surface area.
Signs that are displayed on a residential lot may not exceed 8 square feet
in gross surface area.
Signs must not be placed in the right of way (i.e.. not in a road ditch nor
between the ditch and pavement). Signs on a corner lot must observe a 40
foot sight triangle.

City of DeKalb
A sign permit must be obtained from the City Clerk’s Office located at 200
South Fourth Street in DeKalb. There is a $100.00 deposit required, which is
refunded once the sign(s) have been removed. The sign(s) may not be
displayed more than 90 days prior to an election and must be removed within
10 days after the election has concluded. The signs may not be displayed on
any public property, fences, telephone poles, etc.
Signs that are displayed on a residential property may not exceed 8 square
feet. Signs that are displayed on a vacant lot or business may not exceed 16
square feet.
If the city has to remove any of the signs, the deposit will not be
refunded.

City of Sycamore
A sign permit must be obtained from the City Clerk’s Office located at 308
West State Street, Sycamore. There is a $100.00 deposit required, which is
refunded once the sign(s) have been removed. The sign(s) may not be
displayed more than 90 days prior to an election and must be removed within
10 days after the election has concluded. The signs may not be displayed on
any public property, fences, telephone poles, etc. and must be placed at
least 18 inches inside of property lines and 30 inches inside of public
sidewalks. They may not be placed in a position that will obstruct or impair
vision or traffic in any way or manner to create a hazard or disturbance to
the health and welfare of the general public.
The maximum size of any sign is 8 square feet in area. For signs placed on
vacant lots or businesses, the maximum will be 16 square feet.
If the City has to remove any of the signs, the deposit will not be
refunded.
