News Release

June 5, 2009

DeKalb County Treasurer Christine J. Johnson’s office has made the first distribution of DeKalb County real estate taxes.

Of the $183,118,029.17 to be collected, $39,332,555.95, or 21.48%, has been collected and distributed to date, and a second distribution will occur prior to the end of June.  “By law the first tax distribution is not required to be made until within 30 days after the first installment due date, which would be the first week in July.  Our office will have, by that time, made two distributions of tax money to the taxing districts to assist them with their cash flow needs,” Johnson said.

From this distribution, $4,364,846.81 has been distributed to DeKalb County and the DeKalb County Forest Preserve District, $1,586,532.17 to townships and township road and bridge districts,  $847,655.16 to libraries, $2,883,448.63 to cities and villages, $783,822.97 has been sent to fire districts, $1,385,362.62 has gone to park districts, school districts have received  $22,914,251.31, $2,480,685.50 has gone community colleges, $2,066,908.51 to TIF districts, and $19,042.27 has been distributed to drainage districts.

These funds are distributed by electronic funds transfer. “We have found electronic funds transfer to be a very efficient and cost-effective method of distributing taxes,” says Johnson.  “This is a convenience for the taxing bodies which saves them time and effort as their tax distributions are deposited directly into the bank accounts they specify.”  Johnson also points out that there are costs in savings for her office as well.  “Tax distribution by electronic fund transfer eliminates the staff time and paperwork associated with lost checks, and speeds the bank reconciliation process.”
