FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Illinois State Treasurer’s Office and DeKalb County Treasurer Christine Johnson bring Cash Dash booth to DeKalb County July 28th

SPRINGFIELD, IL. . . .Illinois State Treasurer Giannoulias’ Office will be working hard to reunite owners with their unclaimed property July 28th in DeKalb County.  In conjunction with DeKalb County Treasurer Christine Johnson, the State Treasurer’s staff will be at the Cash Dash booth from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2009, in the Conference Room East of the DeKalb County Administration Building, 110 East Sycamore St., Sycamore.

The State Treasurer’s staff will be searching the state’s unclaimed property database to help people find assets owed to them that they may have forgotten about, or never knew they had. As part of the Cash Dash outreach program, they will have laptop computers that contain 10.2 million names of unclaimed property owners.  If a person finds money or assets owed to them of less than $100, they can file a claim form on site.  Having appropriate I.D. – a driver’s license or I.D. card – to verify your identity will help speed up the process, as will having proof of your social security number. If the claim is for more than $100, it must be notarized and sent to the State Treasurer’s Office for processing.

Examples of unclaimed property include lost wages, insurance policy payments, forgotten bank accounts, stock shares, dividends, mutual funds, security deposit checks, the contents of safe deposit boxes, or proceeds of an estate.  The State Treasurer’s Office does not hold real estate.

In addition to having Cash Dash events across the state, the State Treasurer’s Office lists the names of people with unclaimed property on the web at www.cashdash.net.   Twice yearly, they publish lists of the names of the newest owners of unclaimed property in newspapers across the state, alerting people to the fact that the state may be holding their money or property.

For more information about the July 28 Cash Dash event, please call DeKalb County Treasurer Christine Johnson’s office at 815-895-7112.
