FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 14, 2010
Have you bought a home or other property in the last year? If you have, do you know who is paying your DeKalb County property taxes?
Christine J. Johnson, DeKalb County Treasurer, would like to remind new home and property owners to check to see if they are responsible for any real estate taxes this year. “Each year we have a number of new homeowners who aren’t aware that they are responsible for taxes due on their home this year. They receive a credit against the purchase price of their home at the time of closing, but don’t realize they are liable for 2009 taxes due in 2010.”
Johnson suggests new homeowners check their real estate closing documents, or with their title company or attorney, to see if they owe for taxes due this year. If they find that they do, Johnson recommends that they contact her office for a duplicate bill. By acting quickly new homeowners may avoid delinquent taxes and penalties. “My office will be glad to assist any homeowners with questions about their real estate taxes, or to provide them with a duplicate bill.”
If you have questions about your DeKalb County real estate tax bill, please call the DeKalb County Treasurer’s Office at (815) 895-7112.
