The Veterans Assistance Commission of DeKalb County, Illinois Inc. is a County Governmental Agency that is operated by and for veterans. The Commission provides services and financial aid to military veterans and their families who reside in DeKalb County and qualify for and need assistance.

Local Veterans Organizations in the county are responsible for forming and jointly overseeing the Veterans Assistance Commission as is allowed under the Illinois Compiled Statutes, Military Veterans Assistance Act, 330 ILCS ACT 45,( /01-/045.) and ILCS 5/5-2006

The Veterans Assistance Commission provides assistance in the preparation of Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) forms and other documents, which relate to benefits available to the veteran and their dependents. This assistance can include answering questions about the benefits they have applied for or are receiving, assistance with all DVA forms, assistance in applying for additional benefits to which they may be entitled, follow up services on pending claims and assistance for those whose benefits have been discontinued. Information can be obtained from this office on Educational Benefits, G.I. Home Loans, Disability Compensation, Pensions, Burial, DVA Hospitalization, Medical and prescriptions, lost discharges and other entitlements administered by the DVA.

The Veterans Assistance Commission provides advocacy service to military veterans and their families in applying to the proper local, stat and federal agencies to procure benefits for: employment, food stamps, public aid, counseling and social security

The Veterans Assistance Commission of DeKalb County has an Emergency Financial Assistance Program.  Veterans Assistance is designed to assist veterans and their families who are in need in meeting basic living expenses such as food, shelter, utilities, personal needs and medical expenses considered essential to the health and well-being of the individual or the family. All assistance is paid by voucher to the vendor. Applicants receiving financial aid from other governmental agencies, whether County, State, Federal or Township program, are usually not eligible.

Non-emergency transportation to and from Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers is provided for Veterans residing in DeKalb County needing medical treatment. Veterans are evaluated for the need to receive transportation based upon financial status, physical/mental health disability and accessibility to alternate transportation.

Financial assistance is provided to Military Veterans who served in the Armed Forces of the United States and whose last discharge from the service was Honorable." The Veteran MUST provide proof of an Honorable Discharge (DD-214).
